Albert Camus – The Plague

There is no more important book to understand our times than Albert Camus’s The Plague, a novel about a virus that spreads uncontrollably from animals to humans and ends up destroying half the population of a representative modern town. Camus speaks to us now not because he was a magical seer, but because he correctly sized up human nature. As he wrote: ‘Everyone has inside it himself this plague, because no one in the world, no one, can ever be immune.’

  1. I wouldn't want this dude as my therapist…I think he'd shrug at every problem and say, "Suffering is normal." Not particularly helpful. Even if it is true.

  2. Analysing the closure of some School of Life shops and this video, one may conclude that Alan de Botton is not very optimistic about the whole Coronavirus situation. Quite fatalistic! Never knew this side of him!

  3. It is sort of a punishment from nature though. Coronavirus originated in wet markets of Wuhan where wildlife is traded and slaughtered illegally. This is reminder to all of us that people are fragile, and have to live in harmony with nature.
It is Ironic that this happened in the wake of Climate activism, right after Greta Thunberg gave her passionate speech about how people lost their way.
