I know clients benefit from knowing I’m a real person but you have to know when and what to share. Here I talk about my general guidelines for self-disclosure after being in practice for several years.

I can’t say all the influences that have guided me in effective and safe self disclosure, but I do know I picked up a thing or two from watching videos of Marsha Lineman (Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, DBT, creator) field personal questions from clients. I also learned you could share your own feelings in a supportive way that kept focus on clients from my Seven Challenges curriculum training. Brene Brown (herself a social worker thank you very much) has a lot to say about showing vulnerability facilitated by good, thoughtful boundaries. Rock on!
