DBT Individual Therapy Sessions
Most professionals agree that DBT is best delivered in a group setting: as it is focused on teaching new skills rather than analysing old feelings, there are no privacy concerns to worry about. Furthermore, the skills that we teach are more easily learned in groups. However, some people are simply unable to cope with a group setting, either because of a condition such as social anxiety or because of strong personal feelings. If you are one of these people, please don’t worry. We have a treatment option to offer you that will ensure you get the help you need in an environment you are comfortable with: DBT individual therapy sessions. In these sessions, you can learn all the same skills as you would learn in a group setting, although the pace at which you learn may be a little slower.
When to Consider DBT Individual Therapy Sessions
If you are not sure whether individual therapy sessions are the right choice for you, please consider the following points carefully:
- Group Sessions May Be More Effective – You may be able to make faster progress when attending group sessions as many of the skills are more easily learned in groups. With this in mind, we recommend trying group therapy first if you possibly can.
- Individual Sessions Are More Expensive – Because the therapist can only treat one patient at a time when conducting individual sessions, they are unfortunately more expensive than group sessions. You may also need a longer course if your progress is slower in individual sessions.
- Schedules May Be Less Flexible – We hold weekly DBT Group Skills sessions several days of the week, which means you have a choice when it comes to session times. If you choose individual therapy sessions, however, you may have to agree to a fixed schedule that can’t be changed.
