DBT for Couples

Originally developed to treat Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) by teaching people how to regulate their emotions, DBT for couples has also proved to be a very useful treatment option for high conflict couples.

High conflict couples are people in loving relationships that always seem to end up fighting, no matter how hard they try to avoid disagreements and disputes. Despite their best intentions, they are unable to find a peaceful resolution to their issues and many subsequently turn to professionals for help.

Most types of couples therapy programmes tend to focus on identifying key problems and on teaching conflict resolution skills. DBT, on the other hand, was created especially to help people manage their emotions more effectively, which means it can be a great preventative tool for high-conflict couples to use in their daily lives.

How Exactly Does DBT for Couples Work?

dbt-couples-therapy

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, or DBT, works with couples in much the same way as it works for those who suffer from BPD. A full programme of treatment is normally spread over several months, with therapy sessions taking place online at weekly intervals. Face-to-face sessions may also be available in your area but most of our patients find online sessions more convenient.

Whether you have online or face-to-face sessions, your programme will cover all of the 4 core DBT modules: Mindfulness, Distress Tolerance, Emotional Regulation and Interpersonal Effectiveness. As you work your way through these modules, you will be learning effective new ways to observe, manage and regulate your emotions. For couples, the real value of DBT lies in the ability it gives each individual to dial back their emotions in potentially stressful situations and to choose how to react rather than being driven by fear, anger or rage.
