Crisis Survival Kit DBT

The majority of patients who undergo Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) experience a marked improvement in their condition and go on to lead happy, fulfilling lives. However, whilst undergoing therapy, even some of the most responsive patients may encounter a genuine crisis that they feel unable to cope with. Access to immediate professional assistance can be crucial at such times, which is why we offer all of our patients the Crisis Survival Kit DBT option: 1-to-1 crisis coaching provided by one of our qualified counsellors/therapists.

Crisis Survival Kit DBT Explained

 

You may never need to use our crisis kit but it’s worth finding out what it is and how to access it, just in case.

  • Available to All Regular Patients – If you are currently attending a weekly DBT skills group then you will automatically have access to our crisis coaching service. You don’t have to register separately as it is included in the skills group packages.
  • Individual Coaching – As you need help in dealing with a specific situation or emotional disturbance, crisis coaching is provided on a 1-to-1 basis rather than in a group setting.
  • Immediate Help – If you are extremely distressed, you need to know that you can get in touch with someone straight away. Our crisis coaching is available at short notice so you won’t have to wait to get the help you really need.

In summary, once you join one of our skills groups, you will have access to the Crisis Survival Kit DBT. Should you ever find yourself in a situation that you are unable to cope with or you are seriously considering self-harm or worse, you can talk to one of our therapists straight away.

How Does Crisis Coaching Work?

Crisis coaching follows standard DBT principles to provide effective help from the start. You will be reminded of the skills you have learned in the Distress Tolerance module and guided in their use. Your coach will talk you through the steps you need to take and will be there to support you throughout the whole process. We call it the Crisis Survival Kit because it is designed to ensure that you are able to survive any crisis and continue to make progress with your regular treatment programme.

I completed all four modules of the DBT course in 2020, and I can honestly say my life has been changed. I received so much support from Jason & Jerinda throughout my sessions, and I always felt like I was in a safe space with them. Throughout the course, I built up skills that I am still using today. I have completed 2 modules of the DBT programme so far and I can honestly say it has honestly changed my life. I am not a stranger to therapy. 2 years ago I started general psychotherapy following the birth of my 4th child as I developed what I thought was PND. I also had a volatile relationship. Because of my personal circumstances, things progressively got worse. When I started the DBT programme I was lost, angry, hopeless and saw this as my last chance to solve some crisis of mine. 2 modules in, I feel refreshed and optimistic. I understand myself more and get boundaries. I am more productive and for the first time in a long while I can actually say I am happy. I was feeling insecure, anxious and depressed. I have joined the DBT sessions. I found it so helpful and effective. Before DBT, l wasn’t aware of the skills. I've been working on my DBT skills with Jason for the past 9 months. In that time I have learnt enough repair damaged relationships with family, to begin to curb my unhealthy 'problem behaviours' and to start to build back up my self esteem and work on treating myself with kindness and compassion.
